It can be mixed with oxygen to create a controlled environment for patients who require precise regulation of their breathing. Industrially, carbon dioxide is a versatile gas with numerous applications. It is widely used in the food and beverage industry for carbonation, giving fizzy drinks their characteristic bubbles. CO₂ is also employed as a refrigerant and in the production of dry ice, which is used for cooling and preserving perishable goods. In the chemical industry, carbon dioxide is used as a raw material in the production of various chemicals, including urea and methanol. Additionally, CO₂ is utilized in enhanced oil recovery, where it is injected into oil reservoirs to increase the amount of oil that can be extracted. Its inert properties make it valuable in fire extinguishers and as a shielding gas in welding processes. Overall, carbon dioxide’s unique properties and wide range of applications make it an indispensable gas in both medical and industrial contexts.
